Nathaniel was disappointed the next morning when Miss Pope entered the breakfast room shortly after he did, and Miss Grace was nowhere to be seen. He was even more disappointed to discover Miss Pope did still intend to win him over. She sat down beside him and placed her hand on his arm. He looked down at it with contempt.

“Oh, Mr. Reeves! I am so happy to have caught you at last. We barely had a moment to speak to each other last night, and I have longed for a conversation with you.”

“Have you?” Nathaniel asked, his full attention on his plate.

“Yes, of course! As your aunt said, I hoped we might reminisce about our time in Town last Season. It was such a wonderful time, was it not?”

“It was as good a Season as any, I suppose.” Though he could remember no fond memories of any time spent with Miss Pope.

“Do you remember the party at the Thorne’s home? I do not think I have laughed so much in one night as I did then.”

Nathaniel smiled to himself. “I do not believe I attended that party. If I recall correctly, I had a friend who was in need and visited him instead.”

“No, you were there. I remember.” The pasted smile never left her face.

“I do not believe so, but I will not insult your memory by continuing to object to it.”

“You were at the ball at the Stephen’s, were you not?”

“Yes I was.”

“And we danced together there, do you remember?”

“I do.” He also remembered the tired look she’d given him at the end of the dance, as if she’d done him some great courtesy by being his partner.

The door opened and Miss Grace finally came in. Nathaniel couldn’t help his smile of relief. She looked positively lovely in her lilac gown, and the sparkle he’d come to enjoy so much in her eyes.

Their gazes met and she nodded discreetly. Nathaniel stood to greet her, effectively removing Miss Pope’s hand from his shoulder.

“Good morning, Miss Grace.”

“Mr. Reeves.” She curtsied.

“I trust you slept well?”

“Very. Your rooms here are quite comfortable.”

“Thank you.”

She made her way to the selection of breakfast foods, before returning to the table. Though he’d hoped she would sit beside him on the opposite side from Miss Pope, who still attempted to reminisce on the last Season, she sat across from him instead. It only took a moment for him to realize the wisdom in this. They were both able to eat, while keeping their attention focused on one another.

When Miss Pope paused to chew her bread, Miss Grace asked sweetly, “What do you have planned for us today, Nathaniel?”

Nathaniel did not miss the surprised sound from Miss Pope, or the way her eyes narrowed at Miss Grace. He did manage to keep his triumphant smile at bay.

“It is tradition here that our guests for the Christmas ball begin to arrive throughout the day. There is a large tea served in the afternoon, many enjoy wandering our winter garden or our green-houses, and there is always a place set up for cards and games during the day.
